Lawrence restaurant remodeling, expanding

The fast food at a McDonald’s restaurant on Sixth Street is set to be served even faster.

Dobski & Associates, the Lawrence-based owner/operator of four McDonald’s restaurants in Lawrence, is working to remodel and expand portions of the location at 1309 W. Sixth St.

Nathan Riley, 25, works on an outdoor patio Friday at McDonald's, 1309 W. Sixth St.

The 28-year-old restaurant is getting an outdoor patio and new interior chairs, tables and lights, said Patrick Manning, a company spokesman. The kitchen also is being expanded to include a new freezer and accommodate two preparation lines instead of the current one, a move that will allow breakfast to be served until 11:30 a.m. instead of the current 10:30 a.m. cutoff.

Also in the works: a second drive-through lane for taking orders, a first in Lawrence.

“You can take two orders at one time,” Manning said. “We’ll try to alleviate having the cars backed up to Sixth Street.”

Dobski & Associates hopes to have the entire project completed by mid-June, Manning said.

The company, owned by Marilyn and Tom Dobski, owns 13 McDonald’s restaurants in Lawrence, Topeka, Atchison, Bonner Springs, De Soto and Leavenworth. A 14th restaurant is set to be built beginning next month in Shawnee, at the corner of Shawnee Mission Parkway and Kansas Highway 7.

The Dobskis opened their first restaurant in 1981, in Leavenworth, and bought into Lawrence in 1988. Today, their company has more than 600 employees.
