Lauren Wright, Lawrence, was named a Cardinal Scholar Athlete for the fall 2004 semester at William Jewell College, Liberty, Mo., by earning at least a 3.0 grade-point average. A junior, she plays basketball and is the daughter of Craig and Marilyn Wright.

Joshua Lesser, Lecompton, a senior at Shawnee Heights High School, received Kansas State University’s $5,000 Putnam Scholarship. He is the son of Christopher and Rita Lesser, Lecompton.

Joel Beard, Lawrence, has been named to the St. Olaf College dean’s list for the 2004 fall semester by earning at least a 3.75 grade-point average.

University of Nebraska-Lincoln announces Lawrence students who made the dean’s list for the fall 2004 semester. They are: Ryan Bodensteiner, Kristen Jordan, Luke Lackrone and Henry Schimke.

Jessica Nichols has been selected as an Emerging Leader at William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo. Nichols attended a weekend retreat on leadership. She also participated in team-building activities at the college’s Tucker Leadership Lab. She wrote and presented an essay about a leadership role model and attended an honors banquet.

Ian Adkins, Lawrence, has been chosen to play in Valparaiso University’s Luce Concert Band for the 2004-2005 academic year. The band is an auditioned symphonic band focusing on the development of skills. Adkins is a freshman music education major and a Free State High School graduate. He is the son of Perry and Kaye Adkins, Lawrence.

Silvy Perkins, Lawrence, made the dean’s list for the fall 2004 semester at John Brown University, Siloam Springs, Ark., by earning at least a 3.4 grade-point average. Perkins is a junior.

Brett Myrick, Baldwin, and Lena Fox and Mary Haworth, both of Lawrence, made the president’s list at Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa, by earning a 4.0 grade-point average.

Stella Somiari, daughter of Amy Braide of Lawrence, made the dean’s list at Berea College for the 2004 fall semester by earning at least a 3.2 grade-point average.

William Jewell College announces Lawrence students who made the dean’s list during the fall 2004 semester by earning at least a 3.5 grade-point average. They are: Jenilee Morrison, Jessica Nichols and Lauren Wright.

The St. John Mexican Fiesta Committee announces the recipients of the 2005 Mexican Fiesta scholarships. They are Jessica Hermesch and Andrew Avila, both Lawrence High School students, and Christopher Chavez and Christina Chavez, both Free State High School students.

An Odyssey of the Mind team at West Junior High School placed second at the Kansas Odyssey of the Mind Association Finals on April 2 in Manhattan. The team will compete in the Odyssey of the Mind 2005 World Finals May 21-25 in Boulder, Colo. Odyssey of the Mind is a problem-solving competition. Members of the WJHS team are Laura Drees, Taylor Fulton, Clara Kundin, Geoffrey LaForce, Tess Murray, Allie Skarka and Evan Taylor. Coach is Lynn Burlingham.
