KU softball runs win streak to 3
SPRINGFIELD, MO. ? Freshman Christina Ross allowed just two hits, and Kansas University hit two home runs in a 6-0 softball rout Thursday of Southwest Missouri State, the Jayhawks’ third straight victory.
Ross (7-5) struck out six over the full seven innings.
Jessica Moppin hit a solo home run, her sixth of the season, over the scoreboard in left field in the first inning.
Nettie Fierros hit her second home run in two games, a solo shot to left-center, in the seventh.
Fierros also hit a two-run double off the center-field wall in the fifth.
The Jayhawks added to their lead in the sixth with two runs on two hits and two SMS errors. Pinch hitter Ashley Goodrich singled, stole second and advanced to third on a sacrifice slap by Cyndi Duran. Jackie Vasquez notched an infield single to score Goodrich and scored after two consecutive errors.
Ross threw five perfect innings to start the game before an error and single in the sixth. The complete-game shutout marked her second of the season.
KU totaled eight hits, but stranded nine runners.
Kansas improved to 19-16, while Southwest Missouri State fell to 14-19.
The Jayhawks will play host this weekend to No. 8 Baylor. Games are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday at Arrocha Ballpark.
