De Soto slams Seabury
DeSoto ? In its first year of existence as a program, the De Soto girls soccer team executed — and scored — like seasoned veterans Thursday, pounding Seabury Academy, 6-0.
Shoot, the Wildcats were so dominant, they scored three times as many goals (6) as the number of times their goalkeeper put her mitts on the ball (2).
“It was not what I would have expected from a first-year program,” Seabury coach Gunar Harmon said. “They looked more experienced than I would have thought.”
De Soto got started eight minutes in when junior Jordan Holden punched in a goal at point-blank range. A minute later, Katie Beck took a feed from Nicole Radcliffe and shot the ball off the crossbar to give her team a 2-0 advantage.
Radcliffe had two goals of her own in the first half. Her act was followed by Roxanne Grizzle, who shook Seabury keeper Lindsey Ahlen and angled in a tough shot from the right side. De Soto took an insurmountable 5-0 advantage into the half.
Not bad for a group of girls who before this season had to play with the boys’ junior-varsity squad.
Seabury recovered a bit in the second half. The Seahawks could not create any serious opportunities offensively, but they tightened the bolts on defense, and Ahlen made key saves, giving Harmon something positive to draw from a rather negative score.
“They made their own adjustments to handle the pressure,” Harmon said. “It was an acceptable adjustment, combined with the fact that we only gave up one goal in the second half.
“They’re experiencing the game and learning to make their own adjustments. That’s the important part.”
Harmon cited the solid play of senior Laura Frizell, junior Laura Hoffman and sophomore Erika Hierl in Seabury’s second-half stand.
“We expected, since it’s their first year having girls soccer, an even game,” Hierl said. “I think we all stepped it up and realized that we needed to play our game.”
The Seahawks will play host to Center Place at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Youth Sports Inc. fields.
