Quick pitches Kansas to 9-3 victory over Oklahoma

? Staked to a seven-run, first-inning lead, Kansas University pitcher Kodiak Quick picked up his Big 12 Conference-leading eighth win of the season in the Jayhawks’ 9-3 victory Sunday over Oklahoma at Mitchell Park.

KU improved to 24-14 overall, 3-6 Big 12. OU fell to 19-12, 5-4.

Matt Baty led off the game with a single and was followed by junior shortstop Ritchie Price, who reached on an error by OU starter Brad Burns after attempting to bunt Baty over into scoring position. Junior outfielder A.J. Van Slyke stepped to the plate in the next at-bat and hit a single, which was misplayed by the right fielder, allowing Baty to score the first run.

Second baseman Ryne Price also chipped in during the inning, connecting on his fifth home run of the season, a solo shot that cleared the center-field wall. Ritchie Price plated the final two KU runs in the game’s opening inning in his second at-bat when he singled up the middle to score designated hitter Travis Dunlap and Erik Morrison.

Baty was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two stolen bases.

Quick scattered nine hits over seven innings — including Kody Kaiser’s two-run homer in the third — with six strikeouts.

KU junior closer Don Czyz held the Sooners scoreless for the final two innings.
