Pitchers overpowering: Beckett blanks Nats; Martinez gets Mets first win

? Josh Beckett is starting the season the way he finished 2003, which bodes well for the Florida Marlins.

Beckett (2-0) pitched a five-hitter to extend his streak of scoreless innings to 15, and Juan Encarnacion hit his second grand slam of the week to help Florida beat the Washington Nationals, 8-0, Sunday.

The complete game was just the second for Beckett since he pitched a five-hit shutout to beat the New York Yankees in Game 6 of the 2003 World Series. That performance capped a brilliant postseason, and he was named World Series MVP.

“I’ve seen a tremendous change in the guy,” manager Jack McKeon said. “I saw a great work ethic in spring training. I saw a guy that was focused and determined. He has all that potential, and he wants to bring it to the front, and he has been pitching like that.”

Beckett walked one, struck out 11 and retired 14 consecutive batters before Jose Vidro doubled with one out in the ninth. The right-hander pitched six shutout innings to win on Opening Day.

“It’s a basic formula I’m using this year — control the things you can control, and don’t worry about anything else,” Beckett said. “Right after the last pitch of the game, you start thinking about your next one. If you don’t, you’ll go out and get shellacked, and I’m back to being a .500 pitcher again, and that’s all anybody wants to talk about.”

Until the seventh, Beckett was locked in a scoreless duel with John Patterson (0-1), who was given the start when Tony Armas Jr. went on the disabled list because of a pulled groin.

Mets 6, Braves 1

Atlanta — Pedro Martinez pitched a two-hitter, and New York finally got its first victory of the season, overcoming John Smoltz’s 15 strikeouts and Atlanta.

Carlos Beltran hit a go-ahead homer off Smoltz in the eighth, and Cliff Floyd and David Wright connected later in the inning to send Willie Randolph to his first victory as a manager.

Florida's Josh Beckett pitches a five-hitter in the Marlins' 8-0 victory against Washington in Miami.

Martinez (1-0) retired his final 16 batters, struck out nine and walked only one. The Mets’ new ace earned his 43rd career complete game and fourth two-hitter.

Smoltz (0-2) tied his Atlanta record for strikeouts and led 1-0 through seven innings.

The Mets started 0-5 for the first time since 1963 — their second year of existence.

Dodgers starter Derek Lowe left after being hit on the right arm by Craig Counsell’s line drive in the fifth inning. The ball struck the right-hander just above the elbow, and X-rays were negative. He is day to day. Mike Koplove (1-0) pitched a scoreless eighth for the win.

Pirates 6, Padres 3

San Diego — Khalil Greene’s two-out throwing error in the fourth inning led to four unearned runs, and Pittsburgh beat San Diego to split a four-game series. It was the first time the Pirates scored more than three runs in six games this year.
