Futures event needs helpers

The “Volunteers Wanted” sign remains posted for the Lawrence Futures Golf Classic, which runs May 3-8 at Eagle Bend.

Hundreds of helpers are needed for the week-long event featuring LPGA Tour wannabes who will battle over 54 holes for a purse of $70,000.

Practice rounds are scheduled May 3-4. Morning and afternoon pro-ams are on tap for May 5, followed by the tournament May 6-8.

Volunteers can sign up for morning (7 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.) and/or afternoon (noon to 6 p.m.) shifts. Sign-up sheets are available at http://lawrencegolf.org/futures.

Here is a list of the specific jobs:

Cart Drivers

Carry the bags for each group of pros. Also keep an unofficial score for each of the players in the group. Forty-eight drivers are needed for the first round and 48 for the second round, plus six leaderboard drivers. After the field is cut, only 26 drivers and six leaderboard drivers will be needed for the final round.

Scoring

Receive and verify cards at the scoring tent. Make postings to the scoreboard. Nine hole scorers are needed, too. For the second and final rounds, an on-course leaderboard and main leaderboard (off of the 18th green) will need volunteers to receive and post scores. An estimated 20-25 volunteers.

Marshal

Responsible for gallery control and safety. Also, assist pros by spotting balls and preventing outside agencies from interfering with play. If indicators point to a gallery of 1,000 or more, it will be necessary to secure the optimum number of marshals (two per hole). Thus, as many as 36 marshals may be needed.

Timing

Responsible for assisting in maintaining the pace of play. Each volunteer will work closely with Futures Tour officials. Volunteers will need to be golf-knowledgeable. From 15-18 volunteers.

Driving Range

The range will need to be picked up on a regular basis throughout the day. An estimated 10-12 volunteers.

Media

Ensure that each media representative knows where the media area is and has access to any materials supplied by the tournament. Also may need to shuttle media representatives around the course. Six to 10 volunteers.

Ecology

Responsible for helping with outdoor trash collection and disposal; preparation, distribution and maintenance of water coolers and ice chests on the course; and organization of portable toilets. Each area will need to be closely monitored from pro-am day through tourney completion. Up to 16 volunteers.

Pro-Am

Help with the bag drop and check in, pass out gift bags, and direct participants to hospitality and carts, as well as answer questions. Six to 10 volunteers.

Construction and Banners

Assist with building of scoring structures and installing sponsor signs and banners. Also, ensure banners, signs and structures are maintained properly throughout the tournament. Volunteers as needed.

Parking/Main Gate/Will Call

Welcome visitors and provide them with information and direction. Sell tickets and food coupons. Run a will call for VIPs, players and families or special guests tickets. Distribute programs and pairing sheets. A minimum of eight volunteers.
