Vote today
The important races and issues on today’s election ballot warrant the attention of all local voters.
Lawrence residents should be well aware that today is Election Day. Today, local voters have the opportunity to express their opinions on a variety of issues.
Three members of the Lawrence City Commission will be elected today, along with three members of the Lawrence school board. Although there are only three candidates for the three open school board seats, the City Commission race has featured an active campaign by five candidates. Those elected both to the school board and City Commission will have a significant impact on the future of Lawrence and our quality of life.
Three questions also appear on today’s ballot. Two of those ask voters to provide $54 million in bonds for school construction and renovation projects and $8.9 million to improve computer technology in the schools. The improvements that will be funded by these bond issues are needed and will only be more expensive if we put them off. Our community should show its support for education at the polls today.
The third question on today’s ballot involves a proposed amendment to the Kansas Constitution concerning the definition of marriage. This has been a hotly debated topic in recent weeks and is likely to raise participation in today’s election. Hopefully, those who come to the polls to vote on the amendment also will be able to cast informed ballots in the candidate and bond elections.
Voting is, perhaps, our most important civic duty. Voting in local elections gives us a say in who will guide the government entities that have the greatest impact on our day-to-day lives. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Do your duty: Vote.
