Pittsburg says no to Sunday liquor sales

? On a 3-2 vote, the City Commission has rejected a proposal to allow the sale of liquor on Sundays.

The commission considered Tuesday a charter ordinance that would have allowed the city to “opt out” of a 1949 state law prohibiting Sunday sales.

A Wyandotte County District Court ruling that local governments can choose not to have the law apply within their boundaries was upheld in March by the Kansas Supreme Court.

Since then about 15 local governments, mostly from communities near the Missouri border, have taken the action.

“I don’t think it will have a significant effect on whether there is more drinking on Sunday,” said Commissioner Garry Lassman, who voted against the ordinance. “But likewise, I don’t think prohibiting the sale on Sunday is going to have a significant effect on revenue for Pittsburg.”

Commissioner Marty Beezley, who supported the change, said the people who contacted her were mostly those favoring the Sunday sales, and that she considered it primarily a business decision.

“I’ve heard for years that we lose money to Missouri,” she said. “Well, that probably happens any day of the week.”

Mayor Ralph McGeorge voted against the ordinance and said one reason was a concern that opting out might put the city at risk of losing state money in the future.
