K-State’s Snyder rakes in at least $1.58 million
Topeka ? Coach Bill Snyder receives half the money Kansas State University collects because its football team uses shoes or clothing from Nike, boosting his annual compensation to at least $1.58 million, records show.
Snyder’s salary, for the 12 months beginning this June, is $211,055. However, his employment contract not only guarantees him revenues from the university’s contract with Nike, but also compensation for appearances on radio and television and at university fund-raisers — an additional $1.34 million, according to Kansas State.
Also, during the next three years, the university plans to pay Snyder a total of $100,000 for an annuity of his choosing. He also is eligible for bonuses based on how well his team performs, including $100,000 for winning a national championship.
Documents show that men’s basketball coach Jim Wooldridge is guaranteed annual compensation of $655,000, the bulk of it for media and fund-raising appearances, and that athletic director Tim Weiser is eligible for a $93,000 bonus in addition to his $257,500 salary.
The university released its employment contracts and related documents at the request of the Associated Press, which sought the records last week after a Douglas County judge ordered Kansas University to release similar records for its athletic director, Lew Perkins.
Robert Krause, vice president of institutional advancement, said Kansas State’s goal was to keep the pay of its athletic director and coaches in the top quarter nationally. All the compensation for Snyder, Wooldridge and Weiser came from athletic department funds, he said.

Snyder wasn’t available to discuss his compensation, but Krause said it reflected Snyder’s 16 seasons and his team’s record, with 11 consecutive postseason bowl appearances and 10 regular-season victories for six of the past 10 years.
“That is what he’s worth,” Krause said.
