Firebirds unbeaten champs at Seaman invite

? Free State High went 6-0 and won the Topeka Seaman volleyball invitational on Saturday, defeating Silver Lake, 20-25, 25-17, 25-17, in the finals.

The Firebirds defeated Leavenworth, 25-17, 25-16, in the semifinals. In pool play, Free State defeated Santa Fe Trail, 26-24, 25-14; Topeka Hayden, 25-23, 25-19; Silver Lake, 25-21, 25-20; and Olathe North, 25-11, 25-12.

“They dug a hole a few times and then dug themselves out of it,” Free State coach Nancy Hopkins said. “Some of the games may have been a little closer than they should have been. Overall, they played very well today.”

The Firebirds’ Jenny Heppert had 38 kills and 30 blocks, and Kaitlin Karlin had 45 kills and 29 blocks. Megan Wyatt had 46 assists, and Lacy Malarky added 40 assists. Heppert and Malarky were named to the all-tournament team.

The Firebirds (16-4) will play Thursday at Olathe East.
