Woods good against Chieftains

Mill Valley running back amasses 213 yards, scores two touchdowns in 21-14 victory

? Tonganoxie High’s stingy run defense got half of it right Friday night against Mill Valley.

But it was that other half, the Jaguars’ David Woods, who single-handedly handed the Chieftains their first setback of the season, rushing for 213 yards and two touchdowns — and also taking away two of Tongie’s six turnovers — in Mill Valley’s 21-14 football victory.

“We haven’t faced any runners that are quite that strong or quite that fast,” THS coach Mark Elston said of Mill Valley’s Woods brothers — senior David and sophomore Justin.

The Chieftains (3-1) entered Friday having given up a ridiculous minus-two rushing yards through three games. They limited the younger Woods — who came into the contest averaging 9.2 yard a carry with five touchdowns — to a paltry five yards on 10 carries.

For the most part, Tongie did a pretty good job on David, too, holding him to 114 yards on 29 of his 31 carries for an average of 3.9 yards per carry. But David’s two other runs — a 24-yarder to set up his own two-yard score in the first quarter and a 75-yard touchdown scamper in the second — sparked the Jags.

“We were told all week long that they had only given up 27 yards total through three games, so I was like, ‘Dang, that must be a stout defense,” David Woods said. “And boy did those guys know how to hit, too.

“But we don’t worry about what they do. We knew if we followed our assignments everything would take care of itself.”

And it did for Mill Valley (3-1), eventually.

The two teams traded punts on their first couple of possessions before the Jags set up their first scoring drive.

Mill Valley's David Woods (1) carries the ball while being chased by Tonganoxie's Kaleb Lawrence during the second half. Woods gained 213 yards and scored twice in the Jaguars' 21-14 victory Friday night at Tonganoxie.

Mill Valley, which was credited for 37 offensive yards besides Woods’ monster rushing numbers, gave the ball to Justin Woods for a five-yard gain, then Zach Starnes for a one-yard run to start their third possession.

Then it was David’s time.

He took a swing pass from quarterback Trev Scott for a 10-yard gain. Then ground out two short runs, before bursting down the sideline for a 24-yard run that one ref appeared to count for a 26-yard touchdown, but later it was ruled that Woods was knocked out at the two.

Woods, who missed out on a third touchdown when he fumbled the ball inside THS’s two-yard line late in the third quarter, later took the ball up the gut for the Jags’ first score.

Woods’ second touchdown was even more impressive. He again went up the gut for a what looked like an eight-yard gain, but then stutter-stepped two Tongie defenders to break free to the outside for a foot race where no defender would come close.

Tonganoxie High's Sam Mitchell, right, fumbles after being gang-tackled by three Mill Valley defenders in the first half. Mill Valley won, 21-14, Friday in Tonganoxie.

“He made a move, and we had two people that were frozen, and then all he saw was the cut-back lane,” Elston said of Woods’ remarkable run. “We knew he was good, and, like I said the other day, once one of them gets in the open field, all you’re going to see is the back of their jerseys.”

Elston also saw the back of his offensive players’ jerseys far too many times trying to jump on loose footballs.

Tonganoxie dropped the ball seven times, losing four fumbles; the Chieftains also threw two interceptions.

Elston said that many turnovers were far too costly, even though Tongie quarterback Ross Starcher scored twice in the second half.

“Anytime you give a good team the ball inside your own 30 three times, you’re not going to be successful,” Elston said. “Our kids fought hard, they played hard, just too many mistakes and a couple of big plays by Woods that made the difference.”
