Offensive line keys Kaws’ victory

? The bottom line Friday night at Santa Fe Trail High was Perry-Lecompton’s offensive line.

The Kaws linemen were able to clear the way for the running duo of Sean Blosser and Cory McPherson in a 21-6 football victory over the Chargers. The outcome avenged Perry’s 15-6 Kaw Valley League loss last season to SFT.

“Everything goes to the offensive line,” said Blosser, who finished with 88 yards and one touchdown off 20 carries. “They did everything correct.”

The Kaws (2-2) marched down the field with Blosser and McPherson late in the first quarter, but were stopped short of the end zone by inches. Santa Fe Trail (1-3) had another successful goal-line stand early in the third.

“That gave us confidence knowing that we could drive down the field anytime,” McPherson said of the opposition’s first defensive stand.

But for the most part, Perry’s line was unstoppable.

McPherson racked up 143 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries. The junior also kicked all three of his team’s extra points.

After McPherson scored his first touchdown, the Chargers couldn’t handle the repetitive pounding from the Perry ground game.

“The hogs took over up front,” Kaws coach Mike Paramore said of his offensive line.

The Chargers, with offensive spurts of their own, made it to the Perry-Lecompton 10-yard line with the Kaws hanging onto a 14-6 lead.

Chargers quarterback Brian Shively found Ryan Griffin in the corner of the end zone, but the score was scratched after SFT was whistled for having an illegal lineman downfield.

The play was just of one of several bad breaks for the Chargers, including a dropped punt return that was pounced on by Perry.

“We had opportunities,” Santa Fe Trail coach Dave Watkins said. “That’s kind of what we struggled with all year.”

Santa Fe Trail’s lone score came two minutes into the third quarter when junior Aaron Beatty waited for a hole to open up the middle of the field and bolted 61 yards for the TD.

Watkins said he his team was young and talented but lacking in an area that was evident Friday night: strength.

“I think we’re better than last year,” Watkins said. “It’s hard to say that you’re better when you’re not getting wins, but we’ve got to get physically stronger.”
