The Astronomy Associates of Lawrence met Sept. 10. Steve Shawl, a Kansas University faculty member and lecturer for the American Astronomical Society, gave a presentation on “SETI: The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence.” The club will have a public observing event from 8:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday at the Campus Observing Station. The Twentieth Century Club’s fall luncheon will be at noon Oct. 5 at the Lawrence Country Club. Reservations need to be made by Friday.

University Bridge Club announces the winners of its Sept. 18 game. Hosts were Henry and Gini Wigington.

Blue winners were Carl Schaake, first; Harold Riehm, second; Ed Stellmacher, third; Paul Jordan, fourth; and George Bocquin, fifth.

Pink winners were Isabelle Schaake, first; Aileen Bocquin, second; Dottie Miller, third; Donna Riehm, fourth; and Carolyn Hardin, fifth.

The Lawrence Mentor’s Duplicate Bridge Club met Sept. 15. Nine pairs competed in a stratified game that followed a Howell movement. Don Brennaman directed the play.

Don Daugherty and Harry Talley claimed first place in A and B. Betty Spalsbury and Grant Sutton finished second in A and B and first in C. Donna Munson and Pat Lombardi tied for third in A with Pete Petillo and Linda Randall. Mary Beth Treece and John Gilbert tied for third in B with Bob Huffman and Helen Huffman and took second in C.

The Lawrence TGIF Duplicate Bridge Club met Sept. 17. Seven and a half tables participated in a stratified game that followed a Mitchell movement. Don Brennaman directed the game.

Playing North-South, Sally Taylor and Patt Radford placed first in A. Shirley Reese and Klee Zaricky were second in A and first in B. Kent McCullough and Clyde Romer were third in A. Virginia Eddy and Shirley Vaugh took second in B. Emily Foster and Grant Sutton placed first in C.

Sitting East-West, Helen Huffman and Bob Huffman swept first place in A, B and C. Carol Ball and Mary Joyce claimed second in A, B and C. Wanda Durbin and Jean Otney tied for third in A with Cathy Blumenfeld and Lois Clark, who were also third in B and C.

Playing The North-South cards, Shirlie Vaughn and Sally Taylor claimed first place in A and B. Phyllis Brownlee and Virginia Eddy placed second in A and B and first in C. Terry Tolar and Harry Shaffer took third in A.

Competing East-West, Larry Bodle and Kent McCullough were first in A. Virginia Seaver and Paul Heitzman took second. Lynn Hui and Lois Clark placed third in A and first in B and C. Frances Vogel and Alice Leitch took second in B and C.

Knights of Columbus Council 1372 announces the Knight and Family of the Month for August.

Leo Krones was named the Knight of the Month. He has been a member of the Knights of Columbus for 46 years. Krones helped paint the garage at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. He has helped at the Trinity Interfaith Food Pantry, and he helps on Sunday mornings at the Eudora nursing home. Leo also helps with the club’s yearly Tootsie Roll Drive.

The Anthony Augusto family has been named the Family of the Month. Anthony and his wife, Brenda, and their children, Meghan, A.J., Nichole, Lauren and Devon, are active in the club and church activities. Anthony is deputy grand knight and program director. He helps with parish breakfasts and recently helped with a pancake feed at the Lawrence Municipal Airport’s 75th anniversary celebration.

Brenda is a lector at St. John the Evangelist. The family helps each year with the church’s annual Fiesta Mexicana.
