M. John Carpenter

? Services for M. John Carpenter, 71, Great Bend, will be at 10 a.m. today at Trinity Lutheran Church in Great Bend. Burial will be in Great Bend Cemetery.

Mr. Carpenter died Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2004, at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend.

He was born May 18, 1933, in Lawrence, the son of Miller Joseph and Anna Belle Smith Carpenter. He graduated from Lawrence High School in 1952, earned a Bachelor of Arts from Kansas University in 1959 and graduated from KU’s School of Law in 1962. He had lived in Great Bend for 40 years.

Mr. Carpenter served in the U.S. Naval Reserve from 1951 to 1955. He was an attorney with Carpenter Law Office and had been a special administration law judge at the Division of Workers’ Compensation and a political science instructor at KU.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Lawrence, KU Alumni Association, Kansas Bar Assn., Kansas Trial Lawyers Assn., American Bar Assn., American Trial Lawyers Assn. and International Printing Pressman and Assistants Union of North America. He also had been president of Barton County Bar Assn.

He married Mary L. “Mickey” Hadl on May 2, 1953, in Ottawa. She survives, of the home.

Other survivors include two daughters, Chris A. Klima and Gail L. Carpenter, both of Great Bend; a sister, Martha Eberhardt, Tempe, Ariz.; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
