Homecoming to honor seven athletes

Seven former standout athletes will be recognized during homecoming festivities at Haskell Indian Nations University.

Among the group is Phil Homeratha, the Fighting Indians’ women’s basketball coach. Homeratha, a 1961 Haskell graduate, was a football, basketball and track standout for the Tribe.

Another honoree who lives in Lawrence is Wayne Postoak, a former football and basketball standout who also was the school’s men’s basketball coach in the 1970s.

The other honorees are:

Danny Littleaxe — A 1961 grad and a three-sport standout. He is a former governor of the Absentee-Shawnee tribe.

John Edwards — A 1955 grad who was an alternate sprinter on the 1964 U.S. Olympic team. In 1991, Edwards was named Haskell’s outstanding alumnus.

Larry Spybuck — A 1958 graduate who was a standout baseball catcher and later played men’s fast-pitch softball for Haskell.

Phillip Coon — A 1941 grad who played baseball and basketball. Coon was a survivor of the Bataan Death March during World War II.

Ernie Stevens — A standout basketball player in the mid-1980s who is now chair of the National Indian Gaming Association.

Induction ceremonies are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday at the Haskell Stadium arch.
