Phillies claim rare win in Florida
Lidle takes no-hitter into seventh; Marlins' playoff hopes fading
Miami ? The Florida Marlins are fading so badly they can’t even beat the Philadelphia Phillies anymore.
Cory Lidle took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, Ryan Madson escaped a jam, and the Phils ended two years of frustration in Florida by winning 4-2 Tuesday night.
Philadelphia had lost 14 consecutive games in Miami, including seven this season.
While Phillies manager Larry Bowa joked about celebrating with the two bottles of wine in his locker, the Marlins’ mood was glum. The defending World Series champions have lost four of six, all at home, and fell 51/2 games behind NL wild-card leader San Francisco, which won Tuesday.
“Hole or no hole, we’ll take it one game at a time,” leadoff hitter Juan Pierre said. “We’re in a position where looking up does us no good.”
Against Lidle (10-12), the Marlins struggled just to get on base. He retired the first 15 batters.
“I was making all my pitches and getting ahead of the hitters,” Lidle said.
Lidle’s bid for a perfect game ended when third baseman David Bell bobbled a grounder by Juan Encarnacion for an error to start the sixth. Lidle departed after giving up three hits in the seventh, all infield singles, then hitting a batter and walking in a run.
Padres 9, Dodgers 4
San Diego — Ramon Vazquez and Ramon Hernandez each hit a three-run homer for San Diego, and Adam Eaton beat Los Angeles for the fourth time this season in a 9-4 victory that cut the Dodgers’ NL West lead to 11/2 games over San Francisco. Adrian Beltre hit a pair of two-run homers for the Dodgers, who have their smallest lead since July 17, when they also led the Giants by 11/2 games. San Francisco beat Houston, 9-2, Tuesday night. Beltre leads the majors with 47 homers.
Giants 9, Astros 2
San Francisco — Pedro Feliz matched his career high with four RBIs, and Brett Tomko won his sixth straight decision. Barry Bonds, who had two days to rest after being held out of the lineup Sunday and getting a team day off Monday, drove in a run to help the Giants win for the eighth time in nine games. He also was plunked in the right shin by Houston reliever Russ Springer in the eighth.
Cubs 5, Pirates 4 10 innings
Pittsburgh — Pirates reliever Salomon Torres’ wild pitch scored the go-ahead run in the 10th inning, and Aramis Ramirez’s two-run homer helped Chicago defeat Pittsburgh.
The Cubs couldn’t hold a 4-1 lead, with the Pirates tying it in the ninth on Jack Wilson’s RBI single, but rallied to win their 10th in 13 games. They began the night a half-game behind the San Francisco Giants in the NL wild-card race.
LaTroy Hawkins (5-4) gained the victory despite allowing the tying run in the ninth, the first run against him in 10 innings over eight games.
Braves 5, Reds 4
Atlanta — John Thomson pitched seven strong innings, Julio Franco had three hits and Atlanta reduced its magic number for winning the NL East to three. The Braves’ victory, coupled with second-place Florida’s 4-2 loss to Philadelphia, means Atlanta could clinch its 13th straight division title as soon as Thursday. The Marlins trail the Braves by 91/2 games.
Brewers 6, Cardinals 4
Milwaukee — Victor Santos won for the second time in 12 starts since July 16, and rookie Dave Krynzel scored three runs to lead Milwaukee over St. Louis, stopping a seven-game losing streak. The Cardinals, who clinched their third NL Central title in five years on Saturday, rested five of their eight regular position players. Santos (11-11) allowed two runs and four hits in six innings. Since beating the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field in July, his only previous win was at the Chicago White Sox on Aug. 17.
Expos 6, Mets 1
Montreal — Tony Batista homered twice to reach 30 this season, Livan Hernandez pitched another complete game, and Montreal beat New York before just 3,839.
