Payless ShoeSource to lay off 90 workers

? Payless ShoeSource Inc. will lay off 90 employees next month at its Topeka distribution center, company officials said.

Pat Kirkman, of Teamsters Local 696, which represents about 600 workers at the center, said the layoffs would take effect Oct. 2 and were temporary due to lower sales volume. A year ago, about 100 distribution center employees were laid off, and all were later called back.

Kirkman said November, December and January were traditionally the slowest months, and that the company’s plans to close some stores also might have had an impact on the volume of shoes coming through the distribution center.

She said the layoffs had nothing to do with the earlier announcement that the company was cutting 200 jobs.

“Those were permanent cuts,” she said. “This is temporary.”

Payless had 1,800 Topeka employees before the Sept. 2 announcement that it was terminating 100 employees there and that another 100 jobs companywide would be eliminated.
