Steven R. Zinn

Services for Steven R. Zinn, 49, Lawrence, will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Plymouth Congregational Church. Private family inurnment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Zinn died Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004, in Lawrence from injuries received in an automobile accident.

He was born Dec. 20, 1954, in Wichita, the son of Russell and Mary Albright Zinn. He was a 1973 valedictorian graduate of Wichita East High School. He received a bachelor’s degree in history from Stanford University in 1977 and graduated in 1982 from the Kansas University School of Law.

Mr. Zinn had been a research attorney for the Kansas Court of Appeals and director of the appellate defender project at KU’s law school. He then was a practicing attorney and deputy appellate defender of the Appellate Defender’s Office, where he worked with the Kansas death penalty defense unit.

He was a member of Kaw Valley Soccer Assn. Board of Directors.

He married Jill Mickel Legler on Oct. 11, 1997, in Lawrence. She survives, of the home.

Other survivors include two daughters, Julia L. Zinn and Angela E. Zinn, both of Lawrence; a stepson, Josiah M. Legler, Silver City, N.M.; two brothers, Richard, Lawrence, and Robert, Wichita; a sister, Nancy Conway, Wichita; and his stepmother, Pluma Zinn, Wichita.

Family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence.

The family suggests memorials to the Steven Zinn Children’s Educational Fund, sent in care of the mortuary.
