Soey Bow ‘Bob’ Bong

A funeral Mass for Soey Bow “Bob” Bong, 84, Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Corpus Christi Catholic Church. Cremation will follow.

Mr. Bong died Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004, at Pioneer Ridge Retirement Center. He had been a Lawrence resident for 35 years.

He was born April 22, 1920, in Baturusa, Bangka Island, Indonesia, the son of Tjia A Bit and Bong Joeng Sen.

Mr. Bong received his bachelor’s degree in English literature from Kansas University in 1951. He was a supervisor at Allen Press Inc. until he retired in 1990.

He was a member of the KU Alumni Association and the Corpus Christi church.

He married Sylvia Tjoa on Aug. 23, 1956, in Jakarta, Indonesia. She survives, of the home.

Other survivors include three sons, James Bong, Dallas, John Bong, Holly Springs, N.C., and Jerry Bong, Chicago; a brother, Bong Soey Phin, Amsterdam, Netherlands; a sister, Betty Lai, Singapore; and two grandchildren.

A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today at the church, where the family will receive friends until 8:30 p.m.

They family suggests memorial contributions to the church, sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
