Eagles eager to stop St. Joe

? In rolling to three straight victories, Veritas Christian’s potent eight-man football team has averaged 46.7 points a game.

The Eagles quite likely will surpass that number tonight when they tangle with St. Joseph Christian. Kickoff will be at 7 p.m. at the Lions’ field.

St. Joseph Christian has lost both its games, surrendering 68 points to DeKalb, Mo., and 64 points to Elwood.

“Their weakness is definitely defense,” Veritas coach Doug Bennett said. “They aren’t very deep, but we have to shut down their offense.”

The Lions’ offense almost is as good as the defense is bad. With quarterback Josh Horman operating out of a shotgun, St. Joe Christian is averaging 45 points a game. In the 68-50 loss to DeKalb, Horman accounted for all 553 yards of total offense and all seven touchdowns.

“Their quarterback scares me,” Bennett said. “He’s a great athlete. He’s very mobile and a very accurate passer.”

Veritas is coming off a nail-biting 42-36 triumph over Topeka Cair Paravel, a game that wasn’t decided until Paul Kempf knocked down a fourth-down pass with less than a minute remaining.

Kempf, who also caught two TD passes and ran for another against the Topeka school, has been bothered by a stiff back this week, but Bennett expects him to be ready. Also, lineman Matt Moncher, who suffered a knee sprain against Cair Paravel, is probable.

Veritas will meet Wichita Trinity at 7 p.m. Sept. 25 at Westwick Rugby Complex.
