S.I. honors Lawrence girl

Alexa Harmon-Thomas, a Lawrence 8-year-old, appears in the “Faces in the Crowd” section of this week’s Sports Illustrated magazine.

Harmon-Thomas, a third-grader at Quail Run School, was feted for winning three gold medals in the primary division of the National AAU Junior Olympics in August in Des Moines, Iowa.

She captured the 200-meter dash, the 400-meter run and had the best long jump. In the 400, Harmon-Thomas set a national age-group record with a clocking of 1:08.26.

Harmon-Thomas lives with her mother, Kelly Harmon. Her father was the late Derrick Thomas, a former All-Pro linebacker for the Kansas City Chiefs.
