Lawrence L. Kennedy

? A memorial service for Lawrence L. Kennedy, 78, Topeka, will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at White Concert Hall on the Washburn University campus.

Dr. Kennedy died of natural causes Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2004, at his home.

He was born Sept. 10, 1925, in Kansas City, Mo., the son of John Dunbar Kennedy and Irene Griffin. He graduated from Rosedale High School in 1943, from Kansas University in 1948, and from Kansas University Medical School in Kansas City, Kan., in 1953. He became an intern at University of Oregon Medical Center in Portland, Ore.

He grew up in Kansas City, lived in Lawrence and briefly in Seattle until he moved to Topeka in 1956.

Dr. Kennedy served in World War II, and was in the European Theater from 1943 to 1946.

He began a residency in psychiatry in Seattle before becoming a staff psychiatrist at Topeka State Hospital and later a section chief at Topeka State from 1961 to 1967.

He was a staff psychiatrist at Menninger Foundation from 1967 until it closed. He was director of partial hospitalization services at Menninger Clinic from 1971 to 1999, and was a supervisor and training analyst at Topeka Psychoanalytic Institute until 2001 when he transferred to Greater Kansas City Psychoanalytic Institute, where he remained in active practice until the time of his death.

He served on numerous professional boards.

He married Carolyn Edmund on July 2, 1954, in Portland, Ore. She died in August 2003.

Survivors include four sons, Michael, Kevin, Christopher, and Brandan; a daughter, Julie Tyler; a brother, John D.; a sister, Patricia Wakefield; and 14 grandchildren.
