Haskell to mark 120 years

In keeping with Lawrence’s sesquicentennial celebration, Haskell Indian Nations University will commemorate its 120th anniversary with several events this weekend.

“We want everyone to know they are invited,” said Haskell spokeswoman Lori Tapahonso. “This is going to be a celebration of the positive impact that Haskell and the Lawrence community have had on one another for the past 120 years.”

Friday’s events include a series of panel discussions featuring alumni sharing firsthand memories of Haskell’s transition from a boarding school to a four-year college. The panels begin at 10 a.m. in the tent set up on the university’s powwow grounds.

A traditional buffalo feast is expected to begin at 4 p.m. at the powwow grounds. Other meat entrees will be available for those who aren’t ready for buffalo.

Saturday morning, Haskell will have several floats in the Lawrence Sesquicentennial parade downtown. That afternoon, students, faculty and staff will gather for the annual Welcome Back Powwow, which will double as a sesquicentennial event.

The powwow will feature special performances by the Pomo Bird Dancers from California and the Apache Crown Dancers.

Tapahonso said the Pomo dancers would be in Lawrence for both days. The Apache Crown Dancers are Haskell students.

“We’re very fortunate to have both of them at the same time,” she said. “It will be a very rare and special occasion.”
