Marlins’ visit a success

Florida tops Expos again in home of White Sox

? Maybe the Florida Marlins should make Chicago their permanent home.

Bringing an appropriate end to their odd stay, Jeff Conine drove in the go-ahead run with a walk, and the Marlins beat the Montreal Expos, 8-6, Tuesday for a sweep of their miniseries at U.S. Cellular Field.

“I think we’re going to look at the whole month of September and realize what we’ve accomplished,” said Conine, who also hit one of Florida’s three homers during a six-run third inning.

“A lot of weird stuff has happened.”

You think?

With Hurricane Ivan bearing down on Florida, major league baseball decided last week to move the first two games of the Marlins’ five-game series with the Expos from Miami to Chicago. The Marlins already were in Chicago for a weekend series against the Cubs, and the White Sox, the normal residents at U.S. Cellular Field, were out of town.

The Windy City is a long way from South Florida, but the Marlins took to their new home like, well, a fish in water. They won both games, making them winners of seven of their last 10 in Chicago, and discovered they have quite the fan base here.

Despite short notice and afternoon games on a weekday, a spirited crowd of 5,457 came out Tuesday, paying $15 — $5 went to hurricane relief — for the rare opportunity to see a National League game in an American League park. There were 4,003 at Monday’s game.

Though the crowd again seemed to be split between Marlins and Expos fans, the Florida groupies were much more vocal Tuesday.

D’backs 4, Rockies 3 13 innings

Phoenix — Shea Hillenbrand hit an RBI single in the 13th inning, giving Arizona a victory over Colorado. Hillenbrand drove the ball into the left-center gap off Steve Reed (3-7) for his second RBI of the game.

Cubs 3, Pirates 2 12 innings

Chicago — Corey Patterson hit a tying, two-run homer in the eighth inning and a game-winning shot in the 12th, giving Chicago a victory over Pittsburgh. The Cubs remained a half-game behind the San Francisco Giants in the NL wild-card race.

After retiring Michael Barrett and Jose Macias in the 12th inning, Pirates reliever Brian Meadows (2-4) gave up Patterson’s homer to center. With the Cubs trailing 2-0 in the eighth, Pirates reliever Salomon Torres hit Barrett with a pitch leading off. One out later, Patterson homered to left off Torres to tie the game.

Dodgers 6, Padres 3

Los Angeles — Jose Lima pitched into the seventh inning, Jayson Werth homered for the third game in a row, and Los Angeles beat San Diego. The Dodgers maintained their 41/2-game NL West lead over San Francisco, a 3-2 winner at Milwaukee. San Diego fell 71/2 games behind Los Angeles in the division and three back of the Giants in the wild-card race.

Astros 7, Cardinals 5

St. Louis — Roger Clemens won his 327th career game with seven strong innings, and Houston kept pace in the NL wild-card race by holding on for a victory over St. Louis. Lance Berkman matched a career high with four hits, including a three-run double that highlighted a five-run fourth for the Astros, who have won 15 of 18 and remained a game behind San Francisco, 3-2 winners at Milwaukee, for the wild card.

Tony Womack had three hits, a stolen base and scored on a first-inning double play for St. Louis, which has lost five of seven.

Clemens (17-4) passed Eddie Plank and moved into a tie with John Clarkson (1882-94) for 10th on the career list, while improving to 3-0 with a 1.64 earned-run average in four starts against the Cardinals this year.

Reds 7, Phillies 6

Cincinnati — Felipe Lopez hit a tiebreaking two-run triple in the sixth inning, and Cincinnati held on to beat Philadelphia. The Reds have won the first two games of the three-game set.

Giants 3, Brewers 2

Milwaukee — Brewers manager Ned Yost said he and the Miller Park crowd would be happy if Barry Bonds hit his 700th homer and Milwaukee beat San Francisco. Neither happened. Bonds went 0-for-2 and drew two walks, one of them intentional, in a victory over Milwaukee.

Before the game, Yost said he wouldn’t pitch around the San Francisco slugger just to keep him from joining Hank Aaron and Babe Ruth in the 700-homer club.

Bonds worked counts full his first two times up, popping out to shortstop in the first and walking in the fourth. With the score tied at 2 and a man on second in the fifth, Bonds was intentionally walked, drawing boos from the crowd of 27,209. Fans packed the right-field bleachers while leaving some of the ballpark’s best seats empty.

Mets 7, Braves 0

New York — Kris Benson pitched a four-hitter for his second career shutout and first complete game in more than four years, leading New York over Atlanta.
