Free State trips Olathe Northwest

? The Free State High boys soccer team survived a scare from Olathe Northwest but pulled out a 2-1 double-overtime win Tuesday night at the College Boulevard Athletic Complex.

“If we’re going to have success and do well at the end of the year, then we have to get off to a good start,” FSHS coach Jason Pendleton said.

The Firebirds (3-0) took a 1-0 lead into halftime after Alex Clayton buried a first-half goal. Stellar play by goalkeeper Aaron Williams helped FSHS, but Northwest snuck a goal past him in the 78th minute, however, and forced overtime.

Aaron Ideus ended the match with 41/2 minutes left in the second extra stanza when he hit a shot from the right corner of the penalty box.

Free State travels Thursday to Shawnee Mission North.
