Dole to be honored by military academy

? Former Kansas Senator Bob Dole will receive one of West Point’s highest honors this month.

Officials at the U-S Military Academy have announced that the former Republican presidential candidate has been chosen for its annual Thayer Award.

It’s named for Sylvanus Thayer, known as the father of the military academy. The award is presented by West Point’s Association of Graduates, to an outstanding citizen whose service and accomplishments in the national interest exemplify the academy’s motto of “Duty, Honor, Country.”

Dole enlisted in the Army in 1942 and was wounded World War II combat in Italy, which cost him the use of his right arm. He retired from the Senate in 1996 to run for president.

Dole will be honored during ceremonies on Sept. 29.
