Cal-So. Miss. postponed

Hattiesburg, Miss. — The uncertainty of approaching Hurricane Ivan forced postponement of Thursday night’s game between No. 10 California and Southern Mississippi.

“Our utmost concern at this point is the safety of our student-athletes, coaches, staff, fans and community,” Southern Miss athletic director Richard Giannini said in a statement.

Stanford band apologizes

Stanford, Calif. — Stanford athletic director Ted Leland apologized Monday to Brigham Young University and its fans for a halftime show by the Cardinal band that poked fun at polygamy with five dancers wearing wedding veils. Leland said he would meet with the band to discuss possible sanctions.

U.S. Open ratings in tank

New York — Roger Federer’s dominant win over Lleyton Hewitt was the lowest-rated U.S. Open men’s final ever. Federer’s 6-0, 7-6 (3), 6-0 win over Hewitt on Sunday drew a preliminary national rating of 2.5 for CBS. That means an average of 2.5 percent of the country’s TV homes tuned in at any given moment.
