Yanks’ Giambi struggles in minor-league stint

Richmond, Va. — New York Yankees first baseman Jason Giambi went 0-for-4 in his final rehabilitation game with Columbus on Monday night, going 2-for-16 with four strikeouts in the Clippers’ five-game series loss to Richmond in the International League semifinals.

The five-time All-Star is recovering from a benign tumor and hasn’t played for the Yankees since July 23. He was sent to Columbus to try to work himself back into game shape.

“I told the guys I was sorry I couldn’t give them a little more help,” Giambi said.

Colorado recalls Tsao

Phoenix — The Colorado Rockies recalled right-hander Chin-hui Tsao from Triple-A Colorado Springs on Monday. Last season, Tsao became the first Taiwanese-born pitcher to compete in the majors, appearing in nine games, including eight as a starter. He was 3-3 with a 6.02 earned-run average.

Garciaparra out 5 days

Chicago — Chicago Cubs shortstop Nomar Garciaparra will miss at least five more days after tests showed he has a moderate strain of his right groin. Garciaparra left Saturday’s game in the fifth inning after reinjuring the groin, which had been bothering him for several days. An MRI on Monday showed there was no tear away from the bone, but a moderate strain. He’ll continue to get treatment and be reevaluated in five to seven days.

Mercker suspension cut

Chicago — Chicago Cubs reliever Kent Mercker’s suspension for yelling at an umpire was reduced from three games to two by the commissioner’s office Monday. Mercker began serving the suspension Monday night, when the Cubs hosted the Pittsburgh Pirates. The left-hander also was fined an undisclosed amount.

Orioles put Segui on DL

Toronto — The Baltimore Orioles placed first baseman David Segui on the 15-day disabled Monday with recurring inflammation of his left knee. Segui underwent knee surgery on May 11, and spent the majority of the season working to get back in the lineup. He was activated on Sept. 1, and played that day against Tampa Bay, his first action since April 24. But his knee is still tender and he has been limited to part-duty since returning from the disabled list.
