Central Methodist routs Baker

Baker University’s football team went from the penthouse to the outhouse in a hurry.

A week after opening the season with a 34-24 triumph over Evangel, the Wildcats went to Central Methodist on Saturday and were humbled, 30-6, by the perennial Heart of America Conference doormat.

Baker’s lone score came early in the fourth quarter when the Eagles’ Keeyon Howard intercepted a BU pass in the end zone, tried to run it out, but coughed the ball up on the two-yard line, and the Wildcats’ Silas Williams carried the ball over on the next play.

Williams’ score cut CMU’s lead to 16-6, but the Eagles countered about three minutes later when Mike Petruso blocked a punt, and Brian Byers carried it 20 yards into the end zone.

Then Petruso, an all-conference defensive back, intercepted a Baker pass and ran it into the end zone with about four minutes remaining to seal the victory.

Central Methodist intercepted six Baker passes and held the Wildcats to 215 yards of offense. Meanwhile, the Eagles’ offense racked up 331 yards.

Baker will try to bounce back Saturday when it plays host to Missouri Valley. Kickoff will be at 7 p.m. at Liston Stadium.
