Tongie thrives at home quad

? Clearly the cream of the crop, the Tonganoxie and Baldwin High volleyball squads trounced their first two opponents at a quadrangular Thursday night.

But when the two squads squared off in the third round, Tonganoxie showed it had more than just a home-court advantage. The Chieftains also had mighty offensive weapons as they knocked off Baldwin 25-5, 25-17.

“It’s going to take us a little while to jell,” Tongie coach Brandon Parker said.

That’s a scary thought.

“You know when you play (Tonganoxie),” Baldwin coach Jim Oatman said, “it’s going to be bump, set, spike.”

Tonganoxie (3-0) played steadily in all three matches. Senior Laura Jeannin set up a bevy of blasts for her frontcourt teammates, including senior Addie Heim, sophomore Ali Pistora, junior Sami Franiuk and senior Hannah Heintzelman.

“I think there’s a lot of great hitters, but there’s also great passers,” said Heim, who led her squad with 14 kills. “If Laura (Jeannin) can put them there, we’ll put them down.”

Parker agreed.

“We did a nice job of playing together and really moving the ball around,” he said. “We’re not just led by one person. Everybody on this team plays an important part. This isn’t a one-woman show.”

In earlier matches, Tongie toppled Atchison (25-8, 25-12) and Bonner Springs (25-11, 25-13), and Baldwin beat Bonner (21-25, 25-6, 27-25) and Atchison (25-11, 25-13).

Tonganoxie travels Tuesday to De Soto for a quadrangular; the Bulldogs play host Saturday to the Baldwin Invitational.

Baldwin High's Charley Jo Schwartz, left, spikes past Bonner Springs player Chase Crouch. The Bulldogs went 2-1 at a quad on Thursday at Tonganoxie High.
