Power restored in area affected by Hillcrest truck accident

Electricity has been restored to about 200 businesses. residences and a nearby school that lost power late this morning when a tractor-trailer clipped a power line in a parking lot on the northwest corner of the Hillcrest Shopping Center.

As of 3 p.m., power had been restored to those affected by the outage, according to Karla Oslen, a spokesman for Westar, Lawrence’s electric utility. Those affected included Sunset Hill Elementary School, the Lawrence Community Mercantile, Bella Lounge and Muncher’s Bakery.

The accident occurred about 11:15 a.m. when a CFI tractor-trailer clipped a power line in the northwest corner of the parking lot. The driver was told by authorities to stay in the truck’s cab while the line was safely removed from atop his cab, according to witnesses.

The accident pulled a utility pole against a tree and the line was down in the parking lot adjacent to the Bella Lounge.

No injuries were reported.

Police blocked off traffic along Ninth Street between Iowa Street and Rockledge Road while they were dealing with the power line being down.
