Yanks miffed over decision to postpone

? The New York Yankees are annoyed at the commissioner’s office over the way their game against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays was postponed.

“It was a mess,” general manager Brian Cashman said.

Major league baseball announced Tuesday that Monday’s postponed game would be made up as part of a doubleheader today and said the Yankees had withdrawn their request for a forfeit.

Cashman said the Yankees never asked to be awarded a forfeit, but instead requested that the game be postponed until the end of the season so baseball had time to investigate whether the Devil Rays made every effort to get to New York in time for Monday’s scheduled doubleheader.

“We don’t want any freebies, we’re not looking for freebies,” Cashman said.

The Devil Rays failed to arrive in time because of travel problems due to Hurricane Frances. Because of the delay, the commissioner’s office told the teams to play one game at 7 p.m. and said it would decide later on when to reschedule the second game.

Cashman said the Yankees were told privately that the Devil Rays were directed Friday night to leave Florida, but he said the commissioner’s office was saying publicly that it simply was a suggestion.
