City’s first hotel saw quick name change

With the city set to celebrate its 150th birthday Sept. 18, the Journal-World is taking a look at early-day life in Lawrence:

The “Astor House,” Lawrence’s first hotel, opened Sept. 25, 1854.

The hotel — which was more of a primitive, A-frame boarding house — got its tongue-in-cheek name from the famous, upscale Astor House Hotel in New York City.

By 1855, it was known as the “Pioneer House.” Campers could stay and were fed for $2.50 a week.
