Beard carries Mystics to OT victory

? Rookie Alana Beard has looked like a seasoned veteran ever since the Washington Mystics put teammate Chamique Holdsclaw on the injured list.

The Mystics’ new go-to player had 20 points, a career-high six assists, four rebounds and four steals in Washington’s 67-63 overtime victory Tuesday over the Sacramento Monarchs.

“We worked entirely too hard that entire game to let it slip away,” Beard said. “I think the team did a great job of pulling together and getting it done in the second half. Then in overtime, we set the tone.”

Stacey Dales-Schuman hit a three-pointer to open overtime for Washington. Kansas University product Nakia Sanford, who grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds for the Mystics, scored the game-winning layup with 1:34 left.

Murriel Page made two free throws with six seconds remaining to seal the first victory for the Mystics (13-16) since the WNBA’s Olympic break.
