Six former Jayhawks remain in NFL

Six former Kansas University football players are on the rosters of National Football League teams heading into the 2004 season.

Two of the six — center Justin Hartwig of the Tennessee Titans and fullback Moran Norris of the Houston Texans — are starters.

Hartwig, a 6-foot-4, 305-pound third-year pro, started all 16 games for the Titans last season after never having played center before. He was an offensive tackle for the Jayhawks in 1999-2001.

The 6-1, 250-pound Norris also is beginning his second season as a starter. Norris was used primarily as a blocker and a special-teams player by the Texans.

Adrian Jones is the lone member of last year’s Tangerine Bowl team on an NFL roster. Jones was listed as second-string left offensive tackle for the New York Jets. The 6-4, 296-pounder was a fourth-round selection of the Jets in April’s draft. Jones played tight end for the Jayhawks for three years before being shifted to offensive tackle last fall.

Don Davis, a linebacker, is back for his ninth NFL season as a member of the Super Bowl champion New England Patriots. Davis was used mostly on special teams. Another former Jayhawk with the Pats is defensive tackle Dana Stubblefield, but Stubblefield was placed on injured reserve Aug. 31, meaning he will miss the entire 2004 season.

The 6-2, 290-pound Stubblefield, who has an ankle injury, had started in 149 of the 154 games he has played in over his 11-year NFL career, including stints with the San Francisco 49ers (1993-97, 2001-02), Washington Redskins (1998-2000) and Oakland Raiders (2003). He is a three-time All-Pro.

Ron Warner, a reserve defensive end with the Washington Redskins, is the other former Jayhawk in the NFL. Warner is KU’s single-season sacks leader with 141/2 during the 1997 season.

Two former Jayhawks failed to survive Sunday’s final cuts. Andrew Davison, a third-year cornerback, was released by the Jets, and veteran safety Kwamie Lassiter was let go by the San Diego Chargers.

The 34-year-old Lassiter suffered a season-ending knee injury in November, snapping a streak of 79 starts and 120 consecutive games played, dating back to 1996. But he had reported to the Chargers’ summer camp fully rehabbed.
