Governor to deliver Labor Day address

Topeka — Gov. Kathleen Sebelius will address union members Monday as part of a Labor Day event.

The event will be 11:30 a.m. on the south steps of the Capitol. Teamsters Local Union 696 will be on hand for the celebration.

Essay contest provides chance for scholarship

Kansas seventh- and eighth-grade students have the chance to earn $1,000 to put toward college.

Learning Quest, an education savings program, is sponsoring an essay contest with the help of Kansas State Treasurer Lynn Jenkins.

Students should write an essay about a person they admire who went to college and how it has helped them succeed. For more information about the essay contest and get an official form, go to www.learningquestsavings.com/essay. All entries must be received by Sept. 30.

One winner and one runner-up in each grade level will receive a $1,000 and $500 Learning Quest college investment, respectively, and a classroom party.

Early east-west streets named for war heroes

As the city prepares to celebrate its 150th birthday Sept. 18, the

Journal-World is taking a look at early-day life in Lawrence:

The Lawrence streets named for states can trace their roots back to the beginning of the city, but numbered east-west streets weren’t always here.

According to the Kansas State Historical Society, the original north-south streets were named for the 13 original colonies after the streets were platted and surveyed in fall 1854 by Albert Searl, a 23-year-old civil engineer from Massachusetts.

But the cross streets initially were named for Revolutionary War heroes Pinckney, Henry, Lee and Winthrop.
