K.C.’s Allen emerges as force

Fourth-rounder sparks defense

? It’s time to quit saying the Kansas City Chiefs made no significant additions on defense.

What about the high-energy rookie who leads the team in sacks and youthful enthusiasm?

Jared Allen, a fourth-round pick out of Idaho State, had two sacks of Atlanta’s Michael Vick on Sunday in a 56-10 win, raising his season total to four quarterback takedowns.

The excitable rookie out of Division I-AA appears to be one of those mid-round finds who can turn an average draft class into a superior one.

“He has a great passion to play the game, and his motor’s always running,” coach Dick Vermeil said Monday.

Voted the top defensive player in Division I-AA as a senior, Allen still has never started a game for the Chiefs. But he is getting more and more snaps week after week.

“I just want to win, to tell you the truth,” he said. “Whatever the team wants me to do I’m going to do.”

Standing 6-foot-6, he looks almost willowy at around 270 pounds. Coaches expect him to gain weight and strength just from the natural process of physical maturity.

“We’ve said all along that he’s a good football player, and he’s going to continue to get better and has to play more,” Vermeil said.

“I think he’s a guy who has some very natural instinctive pass-rush ability.”
