Lehman looking to end drought

Baird shares lead at Funai Classic; Singh trails by three

? Tom Lehman gave himself a third straight chance at ending nearly five years of frustration, making two eagles Saturday to overcome a few glitches with the putter for a 5-under 67 that left him tied for the lead with Briny Baird in the Funai Classic at Disney.

Lehman ended the round on a sour note, missing a 5-foot birdie putt that never touched the cup.

Still, he can’t argue with his position. Lehman was at 17-under 199, the third straight week he has had at least a share of the 54-hole lead, another opportunity to win for the first time since the 2000 Phoenix Open.

“The ball is in my hand,” Lehman said.

Baird, winless in 153 starts on the PGA Tour, missed a 10-foot birdie putt on the final hole for a 68. He rallied from a three-shot deficit after Lehman holed out from 88 yards for eagle on the 13th hole.

They were tied for the lead, but this tournament still is wide-open.

Scott Verplank moved into contention for the second straight year at Disney with a bogey-free 65 and was one shot behind, but the real threat was only three shots behind.

Vijay Singh, the No. 1 player in golf going after his fourth straight PGA Tour victory, had three putts catch the lip on the final five holes and still shot a 65. Singh hit the ball so pure that he had only one birdie putt longer than 15 feet on the back nine of the Magnolia course.

Cameron Beckman had a 68 and was at 16-under 200, thriving under the pressure of being No. 123 on the money list. There are only two tournaments left for players to finish in the top 125 and secure their cards for next year.
