Mother sentenced to life for beating son to death

? A Wichita woman has been sentenced to life in prison for beating her 3-year-old son to death after he drank orange juice she was saving for two toddlers she was baby-sitting.

Rosa Sanchez covered her face Thursday as District Judge Rebecca Pilshaw ordered her to spend life in prison without the possibility of parole for 20 years on a charge of first-degree murder. She also was sentenced to 43 months on a charge of aggravated battery. The sentences are to run consecutively.

Neither Sanchez nor her relatives addressed the court before the sentence was imposed.

Prosecutors said an autopsy found 170 bruises, scrapes and cuts on the body of Sanchez’s son, Brayan.

Though her attorney argued at trial that Sanchez did not have the strength to inflict the wounds, two of her other sons said she became enraged at the child when he drank the orange juice she was saving. They said she took him into a bedroom and his screams could be heard through a closed door.

Pilshaw said she was swayed by photographs of the dead child shown to jurors when she imposed the maximum sentence the law allowed.

“I have never in my life seen photographs like I saw of that child,” she said. “The degree of suffering he must have gone through is incomprehensible.”
