Veritas football ailing for WOL

? Paul Kempf and Jesse Schultz have scored 33 touchdowns between them for Lawrence Veritas Christian’s eight-man football team this season.

However, it’s questionable whether both Kempf and Schultz will be at full speed when the Eagles tangle with Wichita Word of Life tonight. Kickoff will be at 7 p.m. at the WOL field.

“We’re hoping they’ll be 100 percent,” Veritas Christian coach Doug Bennett said Thursday of Kempf and Schultz. “Right now, they’re about 70 percent.”

Kempf, who has scored 17 touchdowns — nine on receptions, eight on runs, has a back injury. Schultz, who has rushed for 16 TDs, is nursing a foot injury. Both also are defensive standouts. Kempf, who plays in the secondary, is the Eagles’ leading tackler. Schultz, a linebacker, ranks third in stops.

Veritas Christian has won six of its seven games and has its sights on the Kansas Christian Conference championship. The Eagles are 2-0 in the five-team league.

The Oct. 22 St. Mary’s game, last of the regular season, will be played at Lawrence’s Youth Sports Inc. fields because of a conflict with Westwick Rugby Complex.
