Baldwin sweeps league crowns

Baldwin High’s boys claimed five of the top seven places in their race, and freshman Heather Garcia led the Bulldog girls to victory and a sweep of the team titles by winning her first Frontier League cross-country race Thursday at Rim Rock Farm.

Garcia won in 11:57.9, ahead of Eudora sophomore standout Brittney Graff (12:17.74). Graff had won her previous three races for EHS, which finished third in the team standings.

Four other Baldwin runners finished in the top 10. Sophomore Kelsey Verhaeghe was third in 12:41.68, and freshman Madison Shoemaker was fourth in 12:53.22. Junior Amy Craig was eighth, and sophomore Amanda Vander Tuig was ninth.

Baldwin won the league title with 25 points, 28 fewer than runner-up De Soto. Sophomore Morgan Frehe was the top finisher for the Wildcats in fifth place.

Baldwin’s boys were even more dominating. The Bulldogs finished with 24 points, compared to 92 for runner-up Gardner-Edgerton. Keith Cowart led Baldwin with a runner-up finish in 16:58.23. Baldwin’s Sam Hinton, Zac Towns, Grant Catloth and Chris Elniff swept places four through seven. Brian Gerstner and Dustin Schiller were 14th and 15th, and Spencer Wilson was 18th.

De Soto senior Casey Johnson was the individual champion with a time of 16:54.09, leading the Wildcats to a third-place finish.

McLouth boys 2nd in DVL

Scott Smelser finished in fifth place at Rim Rock Farm, leading McLouth to a runner-up finish in the Delaware Valley League meet. Smelser finished in 18:41.51. Nick Edgell also finished in the top 20, placing 16th in 19:34.89.

Joe Crawford ran the fastest time for Oskaloosa, placing sixth in 18:51.24.

Kansas City Christian won the team title with 25 points, well ahead of McLouth, which had 90.

McLouth placed four girls in the top 20 and finished third in that field behind Jackson Heights and Kansas City Christian. Christy Gunther led a pack of Bulldogs, finishing 11th in 14:01.56. Hilary Turner (12th) and Erin Watson (14th) were close behind, and Hallie Watson was 19th.

Tongie boys dominate

Lansing — Six Tonganoxie boys finished in the top 10, and the Chieftains dominated the Kaw Valley League meet. Andy Kolman led the way for Tongie, winning in 17:50. Teammates Matt Chenowith (fourth), Levi Huseman (fifth), Colin Perkins (sixth), Justin Smith (eighth) and Brett Garrett (ninth) also were in the top 10, and John Davis was 14th.

The Chieftains finished with 24 points, ahead of runner-up Mill Valley, which had 52 points.

Tonganoxie’s Christy Weller was the runner-up in the girls race, and the Chieftains finished second to Mill Valley.

Seabury girls fourth

Burlington — Three Seabury Academy girls finished in the top 20, and the Seahawks finished fourth. Katie Pottorff led Seabury with a third-place finish in 13:30. Wyn Cromwell was 17th in 15:06, and Erika Hierl was 20th in 15:19. Bill Butler was the top finisher for the Seabury boys in 25th.
