KU grad to replace goalposts

Alumnus happy to help after win over K-State

The thought crossed Jack Clevenger’s mind last week while he was chatting Saturday with friend and former Kansas University football great John Hadl before KU and Kansas State tangled at Memorial Stadium.

“I said, ‘I think we’re going to win,'” said Clevenger, a KU alumnus and former Jayhawk golfer. “If we win, the goalposts may come down.

“Assuming all that happens,” Clevenger told Hadl, “why don’t you tell Lew Perkins that I’ll pick up the cost of putting them back up.”

Clevenger, as it turned out, was correct. KU toppled K-State, 31-28, earning its first victory over the Wildcats since 1992. As Clevenger predicted, the students rushed the field after the game and tore down the goalposts, dipping them in Potter Lake and parading pieces around Memorial Stadium and down Massachusetts Street.

Clevenger saw it all first-hand Saturday, and he wasn’t the least bit disappointed his wallet had become thinner.

“The students helped make it happen,” Clevenger said, “so it was nice to see them be able to participate after the game.”

Clevenger, who works for a brokerage firm in Kansas City, has stayed heavily involved with KU since his undergraduate days in the late 1960s.

“KU basketball has had that fun and thrill,” Clevenger said. “Football can do it, too.”

KU associate athletic director Jim Marchiony estimated the cost for new goalposts to be around $6,500. Clevenger made sure it was a bill KU wouldn’t have to worry about.

“I’m sure it’s not in their budget,” Clevenger said, “but it’s taken care of now.”

Game time set: KU is idle this week, but Big 12 Conference officials finally hammered out a game time for KU’s Oct. 23 game at Oklahoma.

The contest will be at noon, and will be televised on Fox Sports Net (Sunflower Broadband Channel 51).

The Sooners-Jayhawks showdown is one of three Big 12 games to be televised Oct. 23. Oklahoma State and Missouri will clash on ABC (9, 49), while Texas and Texas Tech will have the 6 p.m. game on TBS (Sunflower Broadband Channel 10).

Schedule being hammered out: The Jayhawks’ 2005 football schedule still is in preliminary planning stages, according to senior associate athletic director Larry Keating.

The only known games on the 2005 schedule are in the Big 12 Conference. KU will play on the road against Kansas State, Texas Tech, Texas and Colorado, and have home games against Nebraska, Missouri and Iowa State.

The last Big 12 game, against Oklahoma, will be considered a home game for the Jayhawks, but its location is up in the air. Currently, KU is considering playing the game at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Mo., but Keating said it only was “a possibility” at this point.

As for the three nonconference games, Keating said he had spoken with several schools but nothing had been finalized.
