Jayhawks celebrate end to victory drought

Hugs and a lot of high-fives.

The scene Tuesday at Alvamar Country Club seemed like it should have been from a postgame football celebration instead of a women’s golf tournament. But the Kansas University women’s golf team’s streak without a tournament victory even was longer than the Jayhawks’ 11-year football losing skid against Kansas State

“This is just an awesome feeling for this team,” first-year KU coach Erin O’Neil said of her team’s victory in the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational. “It’s been a really long time since something like this has happened, and it’s so special to have everyone come together and achieve our team goal.”

How long, in fact, was a point of contention for longtime Jayhawk golf followers.

Ross Randall, who has guided the Jayhawk men for more than 25 years, guessed KU’s last win might have been under the direction of former KU basketball player and ex-women’s coach Jerry Waugh.

KU assistant coach and former Jayhawk Roy Edwards thought it more current — but joked he wanted “two copies” of the final results for the record book.

While no one was sure, the most recent records indicate that Kansas’ 1990 Big Eight-championship team was the last KU squad to win a tournament.

“It’s been a really long time, but it was all worthwhile for us to be the ones to do it this week,” said Jayhawk junior Chelsey Pryor, who fired the best third-round score of any Kansas player with a 78 on Tuesday — helping KU hold off second-place Texas-El Paso by 15 points.

Junior Tiffany Woods and freshman Annie Giangrosso were the top KU placers as each tied for fifth, scoring 236.

Kansas University sophomore golfer Jill Womble tees off during the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational. KU won the team title at the event Tuesday at Alvamar Country Club.

Three more Jayhawks finished in the Top 25. Amanda Costner tied for ninth with a three-round total of 238, while Pryor tied for 14th at 240. Kansas’ Meredith Winkelmann, who was playing as an individual, finished in a tie for 24th at 245.

Winkelmann, who was the only Jayhawk to play the last time KU played host to the Marilynn Smith Invitational three years ago, said KU had had three coaches in that span.

“A lot of things have changed, I guess,” Winkelmann said. “I think all of us were just real excited to be playing here at home, and we just did an awesome job of getting the job done.”
