Cindy Maude, president and CEO of Callahan Creek, announces the Lawrence-based company has hired Mike Schreiber, Tom Tholen and George Weyrauch II.
Schreiber is vice president of client services. He was vice president of account management from 1999 to 2000 at Callahan Creek, then became vice president of marketing for eSecurityOnline.com, an Ernst & Young company.
Tholen is vice president of strategy and planning. He was executive vice president and director of account services for Valentine-Radford, Kansas City, Mo., where he worked to develop new business and lead the strategic process with agency clients.
Weyrauch is vice president of marketing services. Previously, Weyrauch was vice president of client relations for Muller + Company Advertising, Kansas City, Mo. Weyrauch has extensive experience in new business development, sales and marketing.
Debra Drummet has joined Capital City Bank as a mortgage loan originator at its Lawrence bank. She will be responsible for generating residential mortgage and development loans. She previously was employed with Commerce Bank, Emprise Bank and University National Bank.

Walt Frey, of Oregon, will continue his training Monday on making real estate transactions smooth and stress fee for buyers and sellers.
Tom Lundstedt, of Wisconsin, also will address the real estate agents on Tuesday. He will teach the ins and outs of investment real estate. He will give a presentation Tuesday night at the Lawrence Country Club on real estate as an investment and ways to use your retirement accounts to invest in real estate. The Excellence in Commerce Award ceremony, which will honor 15 businesses in Douglas County, will be at 7:30 a.m. Friday at the Lawrence Holidome. The cost is $14 per person or $150 for 10 people.

The Kansas Department of Commerce is sponsoring its 20th annual Minority and Women Business Awards luncheon at noon Oct. 21 at the Capitol Plaza Hotel in Topeka. The department recognizes Kansas businesses for outstanding achievement.

Workshops to help local nonprofit staff and board members become more successful at raising money through annual giving and capital campaigns will be presented by David Sternberg, of the Indiana University Center on Philanthropy, on Oct. 20 at SpringHill Suites by Marriott.
The Douglas County Community Foundation is providing the training programs free to area nonprofit staff and board members.
The programs are “Annual Giving: Building a Donor Base Strategically and Systematically,” from 9 a.m. to noon; and “The Capital Campaign: The Right Project at the Right Time with the Right People,” from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Lawrence’s fourth annual Home Energy Conservation Fair and Sustainable Homes Tour will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 17 in Building 21 at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds.
There will be several workshops, which are scheduled to begin at 10:15 a.m. Reid Nelson will give a workshop on setting up home solar stations to power electric transport vehicles and appliances. John Craft will give a presentation on “Introduction to Energy.” Jane Koger will offer a workshop on “Sustainable Building Ideas — Lessons Learned Living Off-Grid,” and Michael Morley will present “Building with Structural Insulated Panels.”
A speaker forum will begin at noon.

“Help Prevent Herbicide Damage,” an educational program, will be at 7 p.m. Monday at Douglas County K-State Research and Extension, 2110 Harper St. The program is part of “Project Good Neighbor,” an educational effort to help growers of sensitive crops and neighbors who may use herbicides work together to prevent unwanted herbicide damage.
Kassim Al-Khatib, professor in weed physiology at Kansas State University, will present “Herbicide Drift, Managing Drift, and Injury that May Result from Drift.” Rodger Benson, of Dow AgroSciences, will present “Herbicide Selection and Use Near Sensitive Crops.”

lThe Kansas Small Business Development Centers in cooperation with the Heartland Procurement Technical Assistance Center will offer workshops to educate small businesses about marketing their products and/or services to governmental entities.
The Lawrence workshop will be from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Oct. 20 at the Small Business Development Center, 734 Vt.
The workshop is for the industries of manufacturing, construction, service providers and suppliers. Participants will learn where and how to find locations and resources about government contracting.
The cost of the workshop is $25, and registration and payment must be received by Friday.
