EUGENE, ORE. ? Andrew Walter overcame a shaky start to throw three touchdown passes, and third-string tailback Hakim Hill ran for 134 yards and a touchdown to help No. 21 Arizona State beat Oregon, 28-13, on Saturday night.

The Sun Devils (5-0, 2-0 Pac-10 Conference) are off to their best start since winning 11 straight in their 1996 Rose Bowl season.

“I think you can say we’re for real,” coach Dirk Koetter said.

Hill played in place of suspended starter Loren Wade and injured backup Randy Hill.

“He was a warrior,” Walter said. “He was locked and loaded. I expect great things out of him, probably more than he expects of himself.”

Oregon (1-3, 0-1), which had won seven straight Pac-10 openers, held the ball nearly six minutes longer than the Sun Devils and outgained them 311-283, but the Ducks also lost 83 yards on 10 penalties.

Walter, who threw for 957 yards and seven touchdowns against the Ducks the previous two seasons, was held to 164 yards on 14-of-23 passing. The senior came into the game with 1,085 yards passing and 12 TDs this season, but completed only one of his first five passes for six yards. He finished the half with three completions, two for TDs.

The Sun Devils made it 21-6 on the first drive of the second half, with Hakim Hill scoring a one-yard run after putting the team in scoring position with a 56-yarder.

“The O-line said they would look out for me,” Hill said. “I definitely owe them all dinner.”
