- Strong safety Tony Stubbs, one of the Jayhawks’ leading tacklers, suited but didn’t play. KU coach Mark Mangino said Stubbs was injured in practice last week, but should be ready for Saturday’s Kansas State game. Back-up free safety Rodney Fowler subbed for Stubbs.
- KU cornerback Charles Gordon’s two interceptions were career firsts. Safety Rodney Harris had the Jayhawks’ other pass theft, his second of the season. Linebacker Banks Floodman recovered a fumble. KU has 11 interceptions already this season after having 12 pass thefts all of last season.
- Linebacker Nick Reid, the Big 12 Conference’s tackling leader, again led the Jayhawks in stops. He was credited with eight. Floodman had seven and Fowler six. Forced fumbles were posted by Floodman, Gordon and end David McMillan, who made his 30th consecutive start.
- Mangino had talked about possible offensive line changes, but the same five linemen who started last week against Texas Tech started Saturday — Joe Vaughn at center, Bob Whitaker and David Ochoa at the guards and Cesar Rodriquez and Matt Thompson at the tackles.
- Nebraska surrendered its first safety since 1999, also against Kansas.
- NU kicker Sandro DeAngelis hit the crossbar on a 45-yard field-goal attempt late in the first quarter, and was wide-right on a 44-yard attempt early in the third quarter. DeAngelis was 2-for-2 in field-goal attempts going in.
- Senior Tony Coker, a KU returning starter who had logged only about a quarter of duty this season because of ankle woes, saw some time at offensive guard.
- Nebraska fans, who traditionally release balloons after the Huskers’ first score, had to hold them for a long time. NU didn’t dent the scoreboard until 2:57 remained before halftime.
- Penalties have plagued the Jayhawks all season, and Saturday was no exception. KU was flagged 13 times for 99 yards.
- In third-down conversions, Kansas failed 16 of 19 times, while Nebraska converted only three of its 12 third-down plays.
- KU quarterback Adam Barmann threw 49 passes, fourth most in school annals. David Jaynes set the school record with 58 in 1973. Barmann threw 48 passes last week against Texas Tech.
- Kansas gained 156 yards to Nebraska’s 147 in the first half and forged a five-minute edge in time of possession, but the Jayhawks were plagued by penalties (seven for 49 yards) and poor field position.
- Tom Ahlers of Des Moines, Iowa, was the referee in charge of the seven-man officiating crew assigned by the Big 12 Conference. Duane Osborne of Seneca, Kan., was the side judge. … Kickoff temperature was 63 degrees under fair skies with a 13 mph breeze out of the south. … Saturday night’s crowd of 77,637 was Nebraska’s 226th consecutive sellout.
