Forestry Field Day set by Highland

? Imagine thousands of 30- to 40-foot tall black walnut trees in a 22-acre plantation bordered by native woodlands and a picturesque creek with an Oregon Trail crossing.

That will be the setting for Thursday’s Forestry Fall Field Day.

Staged on the 60-acre property of Doyle Derrick five miles northwest of Highland, the Field Day provides woodland owners and natural resource professionals hands-on opportunities to learn more about woodland management.

Participants will have the opportunity to grade the quality of standing trees and then watch logger Marty Hewins as he fells, skids and assists Dave Bruton, Kansas Forest Service utilization marketing specialist, process the trees on a portable sawmill.

John Clemons, a log buyer from the American Walnut Co., will exhibit a variety of logs and describe the characteristics that make a log valuable. Wildlife enthusiasts will learn how to assess the quality of wildlife habitat on their properties from Randy Whiteaker, a Wildlife and Parks biologist.

Hugh Pence, a black walnut grower from Lafayette, Ind., will teach how to prune from the top down.

A $20 Field Day registration fee is required to help offset the cost of lunch. For information, call (785) 532-3300.
