Kansas University Theatre for Young People celebrates its 50th anniversary this weekend with a reunion, talks and two performances. “Amber Waves,” a play by 1982 KU theater grad James Still, opens at 8 o’clock tonight at Crafton-Preyer Theatre and runs this weekend and next. It follows a northeast Kansas family struggling to keep their farm in the face of an ongoing agricultural crisis.

At 2:30 Saturday, a KU student cast will stage “Still Life with Iris,” a tale about a young girl who discovers the importance of her past after the rulers of the magical land she lives in strip her memory and adopt her as their own. In addition to Saturday’s public performance, “Still Life” will be staged for area school children next week.

And speaking of anniversaries, the Lawrence ArtWalk celebrates its 10th birthday this month. The party kicks off at 6 p.m. Saturday with an opening reception for the first-ever ArtWalk preview exhibition. One work by each artist on the late-October tour of area studios will be represented in the show at Ad Astra Galleria. The sneak peek is the best way to plan your tour-weekend itinerary.
