Veritas excited about site

Rare is the football team that actually enjoys playing away from home. Yet, Veritas Christian High considers today’s road trip a treat.

The Eagles will meet Tyro Christian at 7 p.m. at the Coffeyville Community College field.

“We played down there last year,” Veritas coach Doug Bennett said, “and we liked it so much we told them we’d like to play down there again this year.”

Veritas, which plays its home games at a rugby complex and has played road games on practice fields, loves Coffeyville’s stadium because it has artificial turf.

“They have the same kind of turf that’s on KU’s field,” Bennett said, “so the kids are real excited.”

In its first full year as a member of the Kansas State High School Activities Assn., Veritas Christian has fashioned a 4-1 record going into tonight’s eight-man contest.

Tyro Christian is in Tyro, a town of 240 people located about 11 miles west of Coffeyville. The Eagles — they have the same nickname as Veritas — play mostly against Oklahoma schools.

Tonight will be the first of three straight road trips for Veritas. The Eagles have only one more home game. It will be Oct. 22 against St. Mary’s Academy.
